No, you do not need a referral from a doctor or specialist to see a Physiotherapist!
However, if you are wanting to use DVA or Medicare subsidies then yes, you will need a referral from your GP.
If you have funding through insurance under worker's compensation or CTP, you will also required approval from your insurer and doctor prior to visitation.
At your initial Physiotherapy appointment, there will be an initial assessment including questions and verbal conversations regarding your problems and goals for treatment.
Then a physical assessment is completed prior to a treatment plan.
There is no guarantee of treatment in the first session due to the assessment required and treatment plan to be established.
At your follow up appointment, a brief check in will occur prior to completing a treatment session which could involve either manual therapy, exercise therapy or advice and education depending on your current condition or injury and Physiotherapists' assessment.
Medicare and Private Health Insurance companies cover a portion of your Physiotherapy visit and then there is a gap payment to be paid by you as the client.
Medicare covers a total of $61.80 of your visit and this is capped at 5 total visits per calendar year (shared across all Allied Health providers).
Private health coverage varies across companies and averages $30/visit and capped approximately at $250-$300/year total claiming available.
We do not bulk bill Medicare visits at our practice.
